The best of establishments can't endure without adhering to quality. Hype will take you this further, no more.
This applies most to hospitality outlets. There is competition galore in this field, and unless you can retain your loyal customers by providing solid good food at reasonable prices, you lose in the long run.
Oudh 1590, Salt Lake outlet was my favourite mughlai food restaurant. The galauti kebab, mutton nihari, rezala and tandoori chicken were to die for. And lovely phirni too. All at very affordable rates too.
However, now this outlet has disappointed me big time. Their interiors and decor remain A-1, but food and service have gone downhill.
The nawabi feel is restricted to the looks and ambiance.
They have a biryani festival going on, that really excited me with its range. Also, I wanted to sample their range of kulfis introduced lately.
Went with high expectations and hopes of a sumptuous lunch. Had the Kashmiri mutton pulao and Kerala Malabar fish biryani, along with galauti kebab and tandoori chicken.
The Kashmiri biryani was quite bland, almost plain rice with just a couple of mutton pieces. At INR 550/- it was overpriced, I felt. The Malabar fish biryani was good, with chunks of tasty bhetki. What was unacceptable was they later charged us for packing the leftovers in the same container in which it was served! How cheap is that!
Also the attitude of the servers was pathetic! Take it or leave it, they seemed to imply.
Worse was yet to come. A friend ordered strawberry kulfi that turned out sour! A replacement was ordered but they couldn't provide as they had run out of kulfi. Unimaginable!
As a Mughlai food lover, I am extremely disappointed. This was my go-to eating place for kebabs and biryanis at reasonable rates. Not any more. And their staff needs immediate training in service orientation and soft skills.
How the mighty fall! Didn't expect this from a reputable restaurant like Oudh.
