Delish Bengali veg delights

Whoever said bongs eat only fish and rice doesn't know a thing about Bengali cuisine. Ghoti cuisine, that is food from this side of the border, has some lip-smacking vegetarian delights.

Sans onion, garlic or any meat, these dishes are "pure-veg " and were the solace of our widowed grandmothers and aunts who were forbidden any non-veg food. Yes, in ghoti cuisine, even onion and garlic fall in the category of non-veg.

So we have our dalnas or curries that are jeera and ginger paste based, often garnished with peanuts, chhola or coconut scraping.

My personal favourites are chhanar dalna, dhokar dalna, kumror chhokka, mocha ghonto,  alu kopi torkari and niramish alur dom.

With puffed luchis or teenkona porotas (not parathas) these dishes taste divine.

Kumror chhokka with its seasoning of roast jeera powder and fried chhola (soaked Bengal chana) is a delight with luchi or porota.

Perfect Sunday morning breakfast or dinner on a rainy day!
