Cloud kitchens in Salt Lake- good, bad, middling

With increasingly hectic lifestyles in urban homes, cooking at home is slowly on the way out.

Hassled moms, single people, old couples, professionals prefer to opt for home delivery of regular food.

Here's where cloud kitchens, some of them emphasising on home-style meals,  come in. Salt Lake in Kolkata is catching on with its mushrooming cloud kitchens.

On Zomato, we experimented with a few. Here's my rating:

1. O Ma Me - 4.5/5

Delivers on its promise of fresh cooked, less spicy food. Has variety of breakfast, snack and meal options. Their combo meals and thalis are full value for money. Recommendation- chhole bhature, stuffed paratha, chicken bharta, alu dom. Good for home-style food.

2. Rozy Roti - 4/5

An unit of Rang De Basanti Dhaba, Kaikhali, this cloud kitchen has good options for north Indian food. Rates are reasonable and quantity sufficient. Problem is time taken to deliver. Recommendation- beetroot roti, palak chicken.

3.  Goila Butter Chicken - 2.5/5

The franchise unit in Kolkata doesn't live upto the famous reputation. Barring their kali mirch chicken tikka, everything else is over spicy and floating in tomato puree. Including the eponymous butter chicken.

4. Kouzina Biryani - 3/5

Their biryani is woefully insufficient in quantity.  Taste is average. Only their kebabs are good. Chicken bharta is recommended.

5. Pocket Meal - 2/5

Started well, but quality deteriorated over time. Excessive time taken for delivery. Is temporarily closed.

6. UBQ meals, thalis, bowls - 3/5

An unit of Barbecue Nation, it's good for ordering kebabs and small bites. Their kebab and tikka sizes are really tiny. Biryani is good, and dal makhani. Quantity per plate should improve. Recommendation- chicken biryani,  kebab platters.

Last word - all said and done, a real good homely option to the daily drudgery of cooking is still far away. Especially for those who like tasty, yet healthy food.
