If your heart craves good old Punjabi grub, there's only one place that comes to your mind - a roadside Dhaba!
Think dal makhani, tandoori chicken, butter naan, saag paneer, egg tarka? Rush to the nearest dhaba.
Since we were craving some spicy kebabs and curries, we did exactly that and scooted to Honey Da Dhaba in Kankurgachhi. This place has been around for years, and is known to serve authentic Punjabi dhaba food. After being recently renovated and expanded, the spacious restaurant can comfortably seat about fifty to sixty people.
The interiors are bright and cheerful, the only pain point being the nasal Hindi songs being played incessantly.
These are chart toppers, so they are presumably popular, and you can't argue. How we wish for some Bhangra music/ ghazals instead!
But enough of nitpicking. Let's come to the food. Had our fill of kebabs - Tandoori Chicken and Mutton Adrak ke Panje.
Both were delicious, ample in quantity, with the meat succulent, well-marinated and falling off the bones. You should visit this place only to feast on these juicy delicacies.
Coming to the main course, we had tandoori roti, Murg Methi Malai and Chicken Bharta. Both the gravies were good, the former better for its delicate flavours. The bharta had a little too much haldi, and could do with a little more creaminess.
The items were reasonably priced, and sufficient in quantity. The owner makes it a point to personally greet each guest and made them feel at home. He asked us to check out their lunch buffet spreads on weekdays. At an affordable INR 399/349, you get a full course non-veg Punjabi meal, complete with starters, drinks and desserts! If that is not value for money, what is?
Check it out for some spicy, finger-licking Punjabi fare that doesn't dent your pocket.
