If there is one place every visitor who comes to Kolkata checks out, it is Park Street. The most happening street this is, with rows of continental eateries along the stretch. The place where the cosmopolitan nature of Kolkata is most visible, where Anglo-Indian, Mughlai, Chinese, Italian, and North-Indian cuisines compete for attention.
And among the iconic names of eateries, there are some names like Trinca's, Peter Cat, Mocambo, Kwality, Moulin Rouge and Marco Polo.
Peter Cat beckons us every now and then with its signature Chelo Kebab (an Iranian platter of chicken and mutton kebabs, served on a bed of buttered rice along with a poached egg and barbecued veggies).
It's a dish this restaurant introduced in India, and has become something of a legend.
The other dishes of this iconic restaurant are sadly far from memorable. We had chicken tikka, tandoori prawns, butter roti and mutton nawabi for the main course, along with a Chelo Kebab platter.
The portions per plate are abysmal. In starters, miniscule pieces of chicken and prawns are barbecued, and given with just a salad. No pudina chutney or anything. And just six small pieces per plate. Considering the prices, the tandoori items aren't value for money.
The mutton nawabi was good, though lacking gravy. Tandoori roti was fresh and hot. The Chelo kebab platter was expectedly good. We wanted to have something new here, but the menu seems to be the same since inception. A little innovation and better portions would not hurt, I think.
Since there is a lot of hype around Peter Cat, people flock there, waiting upto an hour or more during peak hours. But, the quality and quantity of its dishes must be upgraded.
Or else, it will be a case of "Uncha naam, Chhota kaam!"
