Karim's from Delhi-6 : Great Kebabs, Average Curries

It's almost winter, and there's a marked nip in the air. And winter means tandoori and barbeque treats like kebabs, tikkas, grills, roasts, the works!

A new restaurant - that claims to be part of the original Karim's of old Delhi (Delhi 6), has come up in the vicinity, and demands sampling right away.

First things first, the food at Karim's, Salt Lake Sector-1, is a mixed bag. The kebabs are good, in fact the Chicken Afghani Kebab is exceptionally tasty.

And the postion size is also very good. Chicken tangri kebab was not that memorable, however. It was the standard tandoori chicken.

What was surprising was the range of kebabs and tikkas was quite limited. Only chicken kebabs were available, no fish or mutton! How's that for a Mughlai restaurant boasting of a rich heritage in old Delhi style delicacies?

In the main course, we had ordered their speciality Khameeri Roti, Mutton Badami Pasanda, and Palak Paneer. Khameeri roti was very soft and delicious to eat. However, for a restaurant catering mainly to the meat-loving segment, it says a lot if Palak Paneer was the better of the two gravy dishes. The Mutton dish was plain mutton curry with some cashewnuts thrown in. What was worse was that at INR 530/- it had only four small pieces of some okayish and some really hard mutton. Now, that'something that really came as a surprise. The Bengali's (and non-Bengali's) fondness for goat meat is legendary. If this is what is served in the name of mutton, then the restaurant better watch out!

We had ordered sweet lime soda as accompaniment, and it was refreshing.

The Phirni brought back my smile and appetite both. It was divine, usnually creamy and soft, and full of nuts. It is one the best phirnis I have ever tasted.

So, Karim's, my report card is this:

Ambiance : 4/5

Service : 4/5

Food : 4/5 (was giving 4.5 but remembered the mutton!)

Portions: 3.5/5 (kebabs good, main course, lacking)

It has all the makings of becoming a "lambi race ka ghoda". Only, it needs a little tightening of the belt!
