Winter Delights for Bongs #PithePuli #NolenGur #PhulkopirShingara #KodaishutirKochuri #BengaliFood

I love winter, if it can be called winter in this part of the world (Kolkata).

Though we don't have the bite in the cold, we do get to enjoy relief from the summer swelter and the sticky monsoons. The winter days are gloriously sunny and crisp. Nights are deliciously nippy, perfect for woolens and blankets. One feels energetic and optimistic throughout the day.

To add to that general feel-good  atmosphere, veggies and fruits abound in the market, making it a foodie's paradise too. Green peas, cauliflowers, red carrots, luscious tomatoes, healthy crunchy greens, it seems nature spills her bounty in these winter months. And my favourite fruits, apples and oranges, peaches, pears....yumm. And let's not foget the colourful winter blooms like geraniums, dahlias, chrysenthimums, carnation, pansies.... Beauties all around!

And coming to the essential Bong delight - FOOD> the delicious taste of "nolen gur" or palm jaggery which takes us to an epicure's heaven. Ahh!! The heavenly taste and flavour of nolen gur sweets at this time! Manna from heaven never tasted better!

Also phulkopir shingara (cauliflower and potato filled crispy fried dumplings) vegetable chop and koraishutir kochuri (puri or fried wheat bread filled with peas paste filling)! The most fabulous snacks that signify winter in Bengal. And not to forget the eternal Bong favourites like mutton biryani, juicy kebabs, moghlai porota, chicken kathi rolls, fish fries, tandoori chicken, sizzlers etc, that taste better with the chill in the air.

And pithe-puli (sweet, stuffed steamed or fried pancakes) and payesh (pudding), characteristic of Sankranti! One can really gorge on winter delicacies without bothering about digestion problems, as appetite is at its peak and rich food suits better.

To be in Bengal in winter is really a blessing! Indulge folks!
